Common Data Definitions
The development of Common Data Definitions is a key strand of work that will enable us to fulfil the MIAP vision.
Common Data Definitions are an important enabler for the MIAP Learner Registration Service and will allow the MIAP Learning Data Interface to pool relevant information quickly and accurately.
This will:
- allow individuals to pull together information held about their learning participation and achievements and help with, for example, developing e-portfolios/learning passports, faster enrolment for education and training and the ability to provide employers with verified information;
- improve the flow of information between agencies, leading to more effective data sharing and better decision making;
- reduce the burden of bureaucracy on learning providers by allowing ready access, with individual learner permission, to information already collected; and
- improve identity checking by awarding bodies and streamline statistical reporting.
Work started in October 2004 to consult with the post-14 learning and skills sector, learners and employers, to identify definition needs about learners, learning provision, learning providers and learning achievement and to seek rationalisation wherever possible.
The primary scope of the consultation has been within England. Some consultation has taken place with representatives of the relevant agencies in Scotland and Northern Ireland and more detailed consultation has taken place in Wales and with representatives of appropriate Welsh agencies.
XML data schemas and data standards recommendations have been published on this website along with detailed contextual information and guidance.
