Learners and Parents

Information for pupils, their parents and learners

Welcome to the Learners and Parents channel of the Learning Records Service's website. This web page briefly introduces you to the Unique Learner Number (ULN) and Personal Learning Record (PLR).

The Learning Records Service offers you secure online access to you or your child's Personal Learning Record. You also have the ability to use a powerful search engine to find verified learning providers that deliver education and training in the UK. This search engine is called the Learning Provider Register.

The Personal Learning Record  offers access to a pupil's official online record of verified learning and qualifications undertaken whilst at school, college or work.  The Personal Learning Record is actually a compilation of a pupil's learning and achievement records such as awards, certificates and qualifications that have already been collected by UK education bodies.  Pupils are able to view their Personal Learning Record online for themselves. They are in complete control of it. Only they can choose to give access to others and share the information if they wish to.  The majority of learners aged 14 or above since 2007/08 will have been allocated a Unique Learner Number (ULN).  The ULN is a unique 10 digit number that is used by the education sector to share personal learning records and ensure that the right information is recorded in the right learning record.

Anyone over the age of 14, involved in any kind of education or training, should not need to provide paper based or certified proof of learning each time they apply for a new course, seek careers or Next Steps guidance or take examinations.  Instead, the he or she can give the school, college or university access to their own online Personal Learning Record to help process his or her application more quickly. This will also help reduce unnecessary paperwork for them. It will help them get better advice on future choices and reduce the need to find original certificates, which may have been lost. It will also help them make more informed choices for themselves.

Pupils and Parents can also use the Learning Provider Register (formerly called the UKRLP).  This is a website that offers access to a search engine to enable you to quickly identify organisations like colleges, training providers, teaching establishments and training centres that have been verified to provide education and training in the UK.

The Learning Records Service is provided by the Skills Funding Agency in partnership with other educational organisations.  We strive to improve the delivery of education services to individuals by providing information services to pupils and education providers, such as schools, colleges, universities, awarding organisations, Next Step careers services and so on.

A fact sheet for pupils about the ULN and PLR is currently being developed and will be available here shortly.
