Wales supports Unique Learner Number

Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills gave her approval in a letter to Mark Haysom, Chief Executive of the Learning and Skills Council, which is delivering the MIAP programme on behalf of partners. She said use of the ULN would be evaluated during tests and trials being undertaken by the Qualifications and Credit Framework.

John Denham, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, said he was delighted that the Welsh Assembly Government had agreed to adopt MIAP and added: “I see this as a positive endorsement of the work the LSC is doing to deliver the Managing Information Across Partners programme.

“One of my department’s key ambitions is for a deregulated further education system, allowing colleges and other learning providers to focus on delivering more effectively to learners and employers rather than on unnecessarily complex requirements from other organisations.

“The MIAP services are a real success story and a prime example of how we can support the delivery of key DIUS and DCSF policies, while ensuring more effective management of information across the education sector, to the benefit of learners and employers.”

The MIAP team is currently working with colleagues from the Scottish Executive and the Northern Ireland Assembly to progress the use of the service across the UK.
